Will Georgia Republicans Try to Fire Fani Willis Before She Can Impeach Trump?

A black man chooses.

With the Fulton County District Attorney continuing to investigate former President Donald Trump and likely to file charges against him, her job could be in jeopardy.

A new law being pushed through by Georgia Republicans would give a partisan committee the power to remove prosecutors in the state that many suspect are targeting Willis. Many fear Georgia Republicans will attempt to use this new law to remove Willis to stop their pursuit of Trump.

The New York Times reports that Republican lawmakers in Georgia have tabled proposals to create an “oversight board” of current and former attorneys and prosecutors that will be able to review the work of current prosecutors in the state. This panel would also have the power to remove prosecutors if they find they have engaged in “willful misconduct”. Critics of these proposals point out that Republicans would be able to choose the panel’s members and that the standards for removing a prosecutor are vague and subjective, meaning Republicans could use the new law to fire prosecutors who make decisions who do not meet them like.

The timing of the bill appears to be in direct response to developments in the case Willis has built against Trump. A member of the grand jury, which was convened to consider the evidence and recommend possible charges, gave several interviews in which she implied that multiple individuals face criminal charges. Her comments have raised expectations that Trump himself could be one of the people facing prosecution over the 2020 case. Such charges could come this summer, which would not only put Trump in serious legal jeopardy but also disrupt his campaign to return to the White House.

After years of seemingly avoiding responsibility for a wide range of wrongdoings, Trump seems increasingly likely that Trump will soon be indicted, possibly on multiple counts. In addition to Willis’ case in Georgia, Trump is also under investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for possible crimes related to his paying “hush money” to Stormy Daniels to cover up an alleged affair with the adult actress. Trump is also under federal scrutiny for taking classified and sensitive documents after leaving office and refusing to return them for over a year until his resort town of Mar-a-Lago was raided by federal agents. Trump is also under investigation for causing the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill; The January 6 committee recommended that the US Attorney General indict Trump as instigator of the violent insurgency.

It remains to be seen whether Trump will ultimately be charged over his attempts to overturn the results of Georgia’s 2020 election. Republicans seem determined to rally around and protect the former president, even if it means changing the law to do so. On the other hand, this and other investigations may have progressed too far to be dismissed. In any case, both critics and supporters of the former president will be closely watching what is happening in Georgia.
