Important facts

Mitchell, a senior GOP attorney who has represented clients such as the National Rifle Association, was involved in the post-election Trump campaign legal effort to overthrow President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, White House Chief of Staff Mark said Meadows, on the call with Raffensperger, but her participation was first revealed on Sunday when the Washington Post reported on Trump’s call with Raffensperger.

According to an audio recording of the call, Mitchell repeatedly supported Trump’s false claims of election fraud, suggesting that she was directly involved in the Trump campaign litigation in the state.

Foley & Lardner, of which Mitchell was a partner, said in a statement Monday they were aware of the attorney’s participation in the Georgia call and concerned about Trump’s urging Raffensperger to find enough votes to award Biden’s victory tilt.

The law firm said in a statement Tuesday that Mitchell resigned “with immediate effect” believing her departure was “in the best interests of the firm as well as in her own personal interest.”

In an email to clients and friends reported by the New York Times, Mitchell said she left the firm because of a “massive print campaign in the past few days by left groups through social media and other means against me, my law firm and clients of the firm. ”

Crucial quote

“Given the ever brazen attacks on conservatives, and especially anyone who supports and wants to help President Trump … wrote in her email, vowing to” double “her efforts against alleged electoral fraud after she left the company.

Key background

Mitchell’s departure from Foley & Lardner is the latest case of GOP allied attorneys with ramifications for their involvement in Trump and his allies’ post-election legal efforts, which were overwhelmingly unsuccessful and widely ridiculed by legal experts. Former Trump legal advisor Sidney Powell is facing potential sanctions in Michigan for her unsuccessful litigation contesting election results, and judges in several other GOP-led cases have also suggested that attorneys could face ramifications for the filing of the cases. Dominion Voting Systems, whose voting machines are at the heart of a baseless electoral fraud theory advocated by Powell, confirmed to Forbes Monday that it intends to sue Powell for defamation this week. Foley & Lardner’s concern about Mitchell’s involvement in Trump also follows other major law firms that have distanced themselves from Trump’s post-election litigation: Porter Wright Morris & Arthur withdrew from representing the Trump campaign in a lawsuit in Pennsylvania, while Snell & Willmer retired from representing the Republican National Committee in a post-election lawsuit in Arizona in which Trump was involved. Jones Day, who represented GOP plaintiffs in a mail-in voting lawsuit before the US Supreme Court, issued a statement in November stressing that the company “was not President Trump, his campaign, or any party affiliated with him represents “in litigation for alleged electoral fraud” or any lawsuit “contesting or contesting” election results.
