The Georgia Department of Public Safety reports that at least nine people have died on state roads over this long holiday weekend. Two of the deaths occurred in Stephens and Hart counties in northeast Georgia. State police officers in Marietta, Sylvania, Albany and Newnan have also reported deaths, as have police in Atlanta, Cobb and Clayton counties.
The 78-hour holiday travel time and traffic count officially began at 6 p.m. on Friday. It ends on Monday 5 September at 23:59.
During the holiday season, law enforcement will maintain increased patrols on freeways and byways to look for impaired drivers, speed offenders, distracted drivers, seat belt injuries and unsafe drivers.
Last year, 14 people died on the streets of Georgia over Labor Day weekend.
