The Senate has adopted laws for sanctuary cities in Georgia. At 33-18 votes on Thursday, the senators voted for the approval of SB 21. The draft law eliminates immunity from municipalities that do not comply with the Federal Immigration Act.
Blake Tilley, chairman of the Senate middle, sponsored the bill.
“Senate Bill 21 only adds teeth to the law of Georgia,” said Tilley. “We currently have laws regarding immigration and some of these laws in Georgia are not being pursued. And only the Senate Bill 21 says that if you do not follow the immigration law of Georgia, you will wave your sovereign immunity when something bad happens because you have not followed Georgia's immigration law. “
Opponents, such as the democratic Senator Nabilah Islam Parks, say that the measure is not needed.
“There is no Sanctuary City in Georgia, not a single one,” said Islam Parks. “This law is aimed at immigrants, children from families of the working class … SB 21 is cruel, it is unnecessary and it is shameful.”
Democrat Nikki Merritt says that the law would continue to burden local law enforcement resources.
“SB 21 will only make this problem worse,” said Merritt. “There is basically a non -financed mandate without describing it as a non -financed mandate. Because now we have to find out how we can hire more people and find the money in our local governments. “
The bill now moves into the house.
