There’s a new move to rename a U.S. Army post after a Bardstown veteran and his wife. A new federal law mandates that all military bases named after Confederate generals must be renamed. That includes Fort Benning, Georgia, which many hope will one day become Fort Moore, Lt. will be called. General Hal Moore is known for winning the first major battle in Vietnam. His wife Julie is credited with changing the way the Army informs family members of war casualties. Even after his retirement, Moore often returned to his post to give presentations. He has been honored countless times by the state legislatures in Georgia, Alabama, and his native Kentucky. Her son Steve found out about the campaign to rename the fort after his father, but made sure his mother was added to the renaming proposal. “When father returned from the Vietnam War, the mayor of Bardstown wanted Hal Moore Day, but Dad refused and wanted to call it Vietnam Veterans Day because he was always about his troops, not always himself,” said he. “In addition to the fact that we love Fort Benning, I was born there, mom and dad were buried there because you loved it so much, and that’s a big reason it should be named after you,” said Steve. The renaming committee is expected to visit Fort Benning this summer to speak with community members. The proposal for the Moores is among the top three candidates.
