The Middle Georgia Judiciary is hosting a fundraiser Thursday

MACON, Ga. (41NBC/WMGT) — Middle Georgia Justice is working to bridge the gap for people who need legal services. Thursday night, the organization hosts its annual fundraiser, “A Taste of Justice,” to help fund this mission.

According to Bill Adams, President of the Judiciary of Middle Georgia, proceeds from the event will go towards helping low-income people receive legal services.

“We’re family-friendly,” he says. “For the first time we will have activities for the children on the field. Kickball, wiffleball, corn hole, simply a fun festive evening is the idea. We’re already having a great response from the community with the sponsors we have.”

Amy Dever, the organization’s executive director, says they deal with civil matters including family and probate law. The organization helps people with legal problems in Bibb, Houston, Peach, Crawford, Monroe, Jones and Twiggs counties.

“We’re bringing people in here that have never been listened to before,” Dever said. “Nobody bothered to sit down and spend an hour trying to understand what their problems are. It’s very meaningful. It makes sense to work with a bright young team. We have a wonderful group of young lawyers. Our office manager, we have a paralegal.”

Adams worked as a trial judge for 18 years and noticed problems with people trying to represent themselves, so he left the courthouse to found Middle Georgia Justice.

“I’ve looked around enough to know that the unmet legal need is significant, it’s huge,” Adams said. “And if we do something about it, it will be a better place to live here.”

Dever hopes people will support her not only through her fundraiser but also throughout the year.

“We also want you to take action as part of our community,” Dever said. “This service is something we need to make sure all of our community members can access.”

Tickets for the event are no longer for sale, but Middle Georgia Justice encourages people to purchase raffle tickets and donate throughout the year website.
