The Georgia Division of Labor plans to reopen workplaces

COLUMBUS, Georgia (WTVM) – After months of flooding its offices with phone calls, the Georgia Department of Labor has plans to reopen; However, the commissioner does not know an exact date.

Commissioner Mark Butler says the offices will be closed because those in the reemployment department are still helping with the unemployment department.

Butler also says Georgians need to realize that the local labor ministry offices are career centers to help with re-employment.

This means that many of the unemployment problems some are trying to solve are not solved in the local offices.

“If you come in and say, ‘I have a hearing and I want to have it today,’ then that won’t happen. Hearings are not conducted by the career center. The person doing your hearing could be in Atlanta. You could be in Valdosta. You could be in Macon. There is a queue that is being worked on and it is all done over the phone, ”said Mark Butler, GDOL Commissioner.

Butler says the department may be considering converting some career centers into call centers.

Many Department of Labor services are now available online.
