The Georgia communities that did not enforce immigration could have lifted sovereign immunity

What is SB 21 in Georgia?

The Republican legislator of the state went to so -called sanctuary cities in Georgia according to a draft law that was passed by the Senate on Thursday. Local administrations and their employees would no longer be protected against court proceedings if they do not work with federal immigration officials.

Some legislators in Georgia are urging local governments that do not work with the US immigration and customs agents (Customs Enforcement).

The Senate led by Republicans performs Senate Bill 21, who aims to forego sovereign immunity that the local governments are currently giving before legal proceedings.

What would SB 21 do?

What we know:

If the draft law of Senate 21 is right, this would remove cities, counties and their employees of this legal protection if they violate the ban of the city of the sanctuary in Georgia. The Republican legislators pushed their move after harder immigration laws after the murder of Georgia Laken Riley's nursing student, who was killed by an illegal immigrant in Athens last February.

Opposition against SB 21

The Democrats of the Senate of the State reject the measure. They believe that legislation would worsen the overcrowding of the prison, that governments open up for careless laws and make it more difficult to recruit law enforcement officers.
