The Georgian General Prosecutor’s Office has indicted father and son who transported ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili to the western Georgian region of Samegrelo after his illegal entry into Georgia a few days ago.
Prosecutors report that Shalva and Zurab Tsotsoria knew that Saakashvili was wanted by Georgian law enforcement officers for serious crimes. Nevertheless, they transported him to one of the villages of Samegrelo on September 29th.
Police arrested Shalva and Zurab Tsotsoria on October 3. If convicted, they face one to four years in prison.
Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili was arrested in Tbilisi on October 1.
Saakashvili, who was President of Georgia from 2003 to 2013, is charged with several criminal offenses, including the violent dissolution of anti-government mass protests on May 7th.
In a letter from the Rustavi detention center, ex-President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili said that all criminal allegations against him were false. Saakashvili also said that when he “left everything in Kiev” and arrived in Georgia, he was aware that he was “most likely” to be arrested.
