The 12-year-old’s physique recovered after drowning in Georgia Lake

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (AP) – According to authorities on Monday, crews recovered the body of a 12-year-old who drowned in a lake in Georgia while trying to help a child struggling in the water.

The teenage victim, identified as Traetor Mitchell, was with his family at Lake Sinclair near Milledgeville on Sunday when he saw a younger child begin fighting in the water, according to Mark McKinnon, a law enforcement spokesman for the State Department of Natural Resources classification.

The child was wearing a life jacket but was having trouble getting back to the bank, McKinnon told The Macon Telegraph. Traetorin entered the lake, pushed the child to the bank, but then went under the water himself and, according to the officer, never reappeared.

Crews began using sonar to search the lake for Traetorin on Sunday evening, and his body was pulled out of the water just before 11 a.m. on Monday.

The boy’s remains were sent to the coroner for an autopsy.
