One person was stabbed and an officer shot and killed the suspect at the Mall of Georgia outside of Atlanta, police said.
The incident began when a suspected thief began smashing up jewelry counters at the mall’s Macy’s store on Friday, authorities said. The suspect then stabbed a store employee who tried to stop him and he fled, police said.
Gwinnett County Police discovered the suspect fleeing the scene in a gray pickup truck, Sgt. Jennifer Richter, a police spokeswoman, said in a release. An officer tried to ram the vehicle to stop it and the suspect got out and tried to run on foot and an officer fired his gun and hit the suspect at least once, she said.
Richter said the victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The suspect, identified as Jose Reyes-Serrato, 27, of Loganville, is in stable condition, she said.
“Our officers acted decisively at that moment to stop the suspect because this is a high traffic area and Reyes poses an imminent threat to the safety of the public,” she said.
