ATLANTA – One of Georgia’s new US Senators says he is not surprised that the Justice Department is suing Georgia over the state’s new electoral law and that it supports the lawsuit.

“We are a democracy and we must do everything we can to ensure that the people get the constitutional right to vote,” said Senator Raphael Warnock on Tuesday.

The lawsuit discriminated against some voters by shortening the days for applying for and receiving ballot papers, limiting the number of post boxes in the counties, and criminalizing certain people who distribute water on long polling lines.

Warnock told Channel 2’s Dave Huddleston that Georgia Republicans changed the law because they didn’t like the November election results.

“All of these flawed provisions that they put in this unjust law are a solution to the search for a problem. They create a problem,” said Warnock.

Governor Brian Kemp said SB 202 was created to clean up electoral matters and some of the recommendations came from Republican and Democratic electoral commissioners.

“That’s the truth,” said Kemp during a press conference on Friday. “There’s someone lying to you about SB 202, the Georgia-passed Electoral Integrity Act, and I’m not.”

Kemp and his team said they will take on US Attorney General Merrick Garland and win. He said Garland should focus on keeping people safe.

“You should pursue the violent crime that we see in our big cities, here in Atlanta and around the country,” said Kemp.

Georgia is the first state to be affected by a voting lawsuit. The attorney general said he and his staff are reviewing other states and may file more lawsuits.
