Prosecutors drop charges against man beaten by Georgian MPs in viral video

Enter the prison cell door

Jarret Hobbsa black man seen being beaten by deputies at a Georgia coast correctional facility will no longer be charged in connection with the attack.

As REVOLT previously reported, Hobbs’ attorney called for a criminal Investigation launched after three videos of the beating went viral online. “This was not a runaway arrest or a trial in fear for your life. This was pure and simple targeted gang violence. The gang members happened to be wearing badges and we urge the prosecutor to file charges immediately,” Hobbs attorney Harry M. Daniels wrote in a November 2022 tweet.

Representatives Mason Garrick, Braxton Massey and Ryan Biegel were each resigned and calculated with an inmate’s battery and breach of oath of office. Two other MPs face disciplinary action, reports CNN.

The 41-year-old was arrested and charged on September 3, 2022 on traffic violations and drug possession charges. Several on the same day deputy were recorded bursting into Hobb’s cell, pinning him against the wall and beginning to hit him with blows to the head and neck. He was then thrown to the ground and pinned down.

Hobbs was charged with aggravated battery, simple attack, and obstructing law enforcement officials. However, on Thursday (February 23) the alleged offenses were dropped. In documents reviewed by NBC News, prosecutors cited “insufficient evidence” as the reason for the firing. The Camden County Sheriff’s Office also agreed to pay Hobbs a “significant settlement agreement” to resolve civil claims, although the amount was not publicly disclosed.

“To be clear, nobody deserves to be hit like that,” Daniels said in a new statement to CNN. “This comparison doesn’t make up for that, not by a long shot. But at the end of the day, Mr. Hobbs’ charges were dropped, the officers who hit he was charged and this settlement gives him and his family a new way forward. We can all be proud of that.”
