Gunther Krichbaum, CDU member of the Bundestag, said on Monday that it was “in Germany’s interest” to “open the way” for Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia to join the European Union.
He also called on the federal government on behalf of his party to advocate “new opportunities” for participation in joint programs – for example in the area of common foreign, security and defense policy – for the accession candidates before their full membership as part of the EU accession process were “opened”.
Because the process leads to [EU] Since membership is often long, we call for the creation of a new model that will allow candidates to be closely tied to the European Union even before full membership,” explained the German MEP.
Krichbaum also spoke about the expectations of the emerging member states and referred to the requirements for them to comply with EU decisions and principles.
The candidate countries must continue to be urged to meet the criteria for democracy, human rights and the rule of law and to step up the fight against corruption. They would also have to implement the EU decisions on the common foreign and security policy without delay,” said Krichbaum.
