Rev. Hubert Max Tucker, 92, of Rome, GA, went home on Thursday, May 11, 2023 to be with His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at His residence.
Rev. Tucker was born on September 13, 1930 in Dekalb County, AL to the late Rev. HB Tucker and the late Maddie Jewell Mince Tucker. Two brothers, Paul Tucker and Wilford Tucker, also died before him. Rev. Tucker graduated from Dekalb County High School in 1948. He was a US Army veteran. Rev. Tucker was a family man and loved having his whole family together, especially at various restaurants on Friday nights. Whenever the opportunity arose, he enjoyed fishing and a round of golf. Rev. Tucker was a member of the Community Chapel Baptist Church.
Rev. Tucker’s primary “birth date” was August 1942, when he was born again after accepting Jesus into his heart. This rebirth was the beginning of his calling to serve the kingdom of God. Rev. Tucker accepted the call to preach in 1955 and was licensed to preach the gospel on April 13, 1955 by the Second Baptist Church in Fort Payne, AL. He was then ordained to the work of the gospel on September 2, 1956 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. His long career in church service took him to many stations along the way. From September 1956 to June 1960 he was pastor of Shiloh Springs Baptist Church in Talladega, Alabama, and then from February 1961 to March 1963 at Chandler Springs Baptist Church in Talladega. From April 1963 to May 1964 he was pastor of the Second Baptist Church in Fort Payne. In October 1964 Rev. Tucker was called to the Shorter Avenue Baptist Church in Rome, GA where his influence in Rome began. He served at Shorter Avenue Baptist Church until May 1971, returning to Fort Payne from June 1971 to January 1980 to fulfill his second pastoral term at Second Baptist Church. In February 1980 he returned to Rome, where he served as pastor of the New Antioch Baptist Church until 1995. In 1995, he briefly retired from his full-time pastorship until he was called by the Community Chapel Baptist Church to serve as an interim pastor. After serving as an interim pastor for a year, the church chose him to be the senior pastor, where he served until his retirement in November 2022. He was appointed pastor emeritus, capping more than 65 years of faithful service that has shaped countless lives.
