Obituary | Donald Calvin Law of Rome, Georgia

Mr Donald Calvin “Don” Law, 79, of Rome, passed away at a local hospital on Thursday, May 18, 2023.

Mr Law was born on May 17, 1944 in Oxford, Alabama to the late Calvin Hardin Law and the late Hughlene Strickland Law. Also before him died a sister, Beverley Palmer, a brother-in-law, Bill Cromer, and a nephew, Chris Cromer. Don moved to Rome in his eighth grade and graduated from West Rome High School in 1962 with majors in baseball, basketball and football. He then went to Citadel on a football scholarship for a year and then moved to Berry, where he played baseball and basketball. While at Berry, he began dating and eventually married the love of his 56-year life, Pat. Don accepted a coaching position at Bass High School and then served as head basketball coach and dean of students at Marist High School in Atlanta. His athletic and coaching skills have earned him the following honors: All State in Football & Baseball, Berry College Athletics Hall of Fame, Rome Floyd County Hall of Fame and Atlanta Tip Off Club Coach of the Month.

In 1977 he moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where he served as VP of Sales at Sunland Plans. QSP Reader’s Digest bought Sunland and Don worked with them fundraising for schools for over 30 years. He also worked with Bill Miller Photography, handling school pictures in schools. Seeing Alabama football, the Atlanta Braves, fishing at their lake house in Cedar Bluff, seeing all 50 states and other countries on business trips and vacations, and watching his two grandchildren play sports all made him happy.
