Federal prosecutors on Friday released new details about several Oath Keepers charged with seditious conspiracy in the Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol, saying a co-defendant kept a “death list” that included the name of a Georgia election official and his family member contained .
The Justice Department cited the list in an earlier filing in February 2021, but only announced on Friday that it included a Georgia official.
According to the filing, on Jan. 19, 2021, law enforcement searched Thomas Caldwell’s home in Virginia.
“During the search, law enforcement found a document containing the handwritten words ‘DEATH LIST’ at the top with the name of a Georgia election official, an alleged family member of that officer, and the county and state associated with that officer, all handwritten underneath,” it said.
Prosecutors did not name the officer or his family member, but said they “became the target of unsubstantiated conspiracy theories that they were involved in voter fraud” after the 2020 election.
“Caldwell’s creation and maintenance of a ‘death list’ of officials involved in the presidential election process – concurrent with his preparation to travel to Washington, DC – illustrates his actions during the alleged conspiracy and intent to violently resist the transfer of power,” it says in the file.
Caldwell told CNN that “the DOJ’s claim that I attempted to murder poll workers is a 100% false and disgusting lie.”
The filing – which previews evidence to be presented in court in September – also says an unindicted co-conspirator named Jeremy Brown planted explosives in the Washington, DC area prior to the Jan. 6 attack.
