“This annual fundraiser is a highly anticipated event, bringing our members and supporters together to celebrate advances in the treatment and understanding of mental illness, raise funds and have a wonderful time,” said Kim H. Jones, Managing Director of NAMI Georgia. “I encourage everyone interested in improving mental health awareness and care to join us for a fun evening of fundraising for the important work NAMI is doing in our state.”
On October 15, NAMI Georgia will hold its annual NAMI Walks Kick-off beginning at 10 a.m. at the Georgia State Capitol in downtown Atlanta. Participants raise funds for NAMI Georgia by asking organizations and individuals to sponsor them at the walk. Individuals and teams are invited to register now at www.namiwalks.org/georgia.
NAMI Georgia has a lot to celebrate this year. NAMIGA recently worked to pass Georgia House Bill 1013, which is the largest mental health bill in state history. The law passed unanimously in state legislature and was signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp earlier this year. Among other things, the new bill will require insurance providers to cover mental health care in the same way as physical health. It introduces government grants for outpatient care, seeks to increase the number of mental health providers in Georgia, and assists first responders when called into a situation where someone is experiencing a mental or behavioral health crisis.
“Prior to this legislation, Mental Health America ranked Georgia 48th for access to mental health care,” Jones said. “Now Georgian law will conform to federal law, and our state will allocate millions of additional dollars to mental health treatment and crisis services.”
