Republican Mike Collins was sworn in last week to represent Georgia’s 10th congressional district – which includes Morgan County – in the US House of Representatives.
Collins released the following statement after the inauguration ceremony.
“It is a great honor to represent the people of Georgia’s 10th Circuit and to be their conservative voice in our nation’s capital. I look forward to working as the new Republican majority in the House of Representatives to curb the reckless spending and overhype of the Joe Biden and Democrat administrations,” Collins said. “It’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work to put our country back on the path to prosperity and security.”
Collins decided to run for office after Republican Jody Hice voted against serving another term as U.S. Congressman for Georgia’s 10th congressional district. Collins won a crowded Republican primary last year and then defeated Democrat Tabitha Johnson-Green during the Nov. 8 midterm election.
Morgan County voters helped elect Collins to Georgia’s 10th congressional district during the November 2022 midterm election. Collins received 75.49 percent of the vote in Morgan, accounting for 7,709 votes, while Democratic nominee Tabitha Johnson-Green received 2,503 ballots and received 24.51 percent of Morgan’s vote.
Collins describes himself as “pro-Trump. America first. businessman. Outsider. Conservative for the 10th District of Georgia.”
“I believe in the Constitution and that the Founding Fathers got it right the first time. I believe in free market economies. I believe in individual freedom and personal responsibility. I believe in limited government, especially limited federal government,” Collins said during the campaign.
Collins’ platform includes cutting federal spending, protecting gun rights, expanding school choices for families, banning critical race theory from schools, supporting law enforcement officials, fighting immigration and improving border security, and “preserving the integrity of the elections”.
According to Collins, he has decades of experience as an “entrepreneur, businessman and employer”. Collins and his wife, Legh Ann Collins, who live in Jackson, Georgia, founded a successful trucking company in the 1990s that employed more than 100 Georgians. Collins was also a board member and chairman of one of Georgia’s largest credit unions and president of its local chamber of commerce.
“This experience informs Mike’s top policy priorities, which are to cut wasteful spending and free small business owners from onerous regulations so our economy can grow and hard-working Americans can prosper,” said a statement from Collins’ office.
Collins vows to keep his promises to the people who voted him into office.
“I couldn’t be happier to have accomplished what I promised my constituents — to take back the House of Representatives and make it the most conservative body we’ve had in decades,” Collins said. “This freshman class is an America First, policy-oriented group that has worked hard to restore a more open and transparent legislative process… I look forward to two exciting and productive years working with leadership and all my peers to bring about conservative legislation in the… To frame these new frameworks to be adopted and to address the problems Americans face every day because of the Democrats’ disastrous agenda. While democracy can be messy at times, I am proud to have been part of this historic process that will ultimately benefit not just my constituents but all Americans.”
