Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) was mocked on “The Daily Show” Monday for her response to former President Trump’s ongoing election interference case in Georgia.
Mace responded to a question from host Charlamagne tha God about whether she believes the evidence presented against Trump.
“What evidence?” she asked, causing a commotion in the crowd, including laughter and sounds of disapproval. She continued: “Which charge, which?”
Mace referred to the allegations against the former president and his allies who are accused of trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia, saying she “hasn’t seen the evidence yet.”
“I also do a lot of work in the civil rights field, and everyone has the right to due process under the law, and if they are found guilty, they take responsibility for it. But I have seen no evidence that he is guilty of this,” Mace said.
Mace said, “There are a lot of people around him who have done a lot of things,” referring to the three former Trump campaign lawyers who have already pleaded guilty in the case.
Mace was asked if she thought it was a waste of time to delve deeper into Biden. Her answer sparked additional laughter from the audience.
“Well, corruption is a real problem in this country, and I’ve seen bank accounts … of the president’s grandsons with money coming directly from communist China,” Mace said.
The South Carolina congresswoman said she has seen the evidence against Biden and wants the public to see it.
“This shouldn’t be happening in our country, and it should be disclosed so that every … American can see it and then decide whether it’s OK or not,” Mace said. “Whether there is impeachment or not, I want people to see the evidence I have seen and make their own decision.”
In the Monday interview, Mace was asked whether she thought President Biden’s impeachment inquiry was legitimate or whether it was a “repeat” because of the two impeachment trials Trump has faced.
“What we should do is follow the facts, follow the truth and then make a decision at the right time, once we have gone through due process, once we have presented evidence as to whether impeachment is warranted or not. “This is what the American people want,” Mace said. “That’s what they deserve and that’s what we should do.”
In a statement to The Hill on Tuesday, Mace alluded to Biden selling out his country for “an unbelievable amount of money.”
“We will not stop until 100% of Americans know the truth and what happened to the Biden family and the extent and extent of the corruption,” Mace’s statement said. “When we are done, this will be one of the most corrupt presidencies in the history of the United States, and we should not stop until every single American knows what happened.”
In the “Daily Show” interview, Mace criticized former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for his handling of the Biden impeachment inquiry; McCarthy addressed conservative members and said they would “definitely impeach Joe Biden,” and hours later she told moderates that they would “never impeach Joe Biden,” she said.
Mace was an outspoken opponent of McCarthy and said she felt demonized for voting to oust him. She wore a red “A” on her shirt, a reference to “The Scarlet Letter,” after she was one of eight Republicans who voted to remove McCarthy.
She said she believes new Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) will follow due process in Biden’s impeachment hearings.
