Ludacris receives an honorary doctorate from Georgia State College

ATLANTA, Georgia (CBS46) – Atlanta rapper and alumnus of Georgia State University Chris “Ludacris” Bridges will be the youngest-ever recipient of an honorary doctorate from the school he attended before his fame.

Ludacris, who attended GSU in the early 1990s before signing with Def Jam Records, is honored during GSU’s opening night at Center Parc Stadium on May 4th.

The University System of Georgia Board of Regents on Wednesday approved the honors bachelor’s degree in music management, citing his success in the industry, his support of the state of Georgia’s creative media arts and law programs, and his statewide philanthropic efforts.

“We are proud that Chris Bridges (Ludacris) started in the state of Georgia,” said Georgia State President M. Brian Blake. “He has become a cultural and philanthropic icon who represents Atlanta and gives back in many ways. Our students at the Creative Media Industries Institute (CMII) and College of Law have benefited from his career and we are delighted to honor him as a member of the Panther family.”

The award-winning artist joined Georgia State’s CMII as Artist-in-Residence in 2019. In this role, he mentored students and worked with professors focused on entrepreneurship in music and film.

“It’s a dream come true for me,” said Ludacris. “The State of Georgia helped me get started and I am honored and excited to share this milestone with the world.”

The public is invited to attend the ceremony in May.
