The US embassy in Tbilisi, the EU delegation in Georgia and the Swedish ambassador Ulrik Tideström congratulated Georgia today on the centenary of the first Georgian constitution.
The US Embassy stressed that “values expressed in the first constitution” are “as important in 2021 as they are in 1921” and urged Georgia to reassign itself to “work on behalf of its citizens for a more perfect democracy”.
“Citizens, elected officials and party leaders from all sides must take steps to de-escalate the current political crisis, work peacefully in democratic institutions and keep Georgia on its way to further Euro-Atlantic integration,” the message said.
The EU delegation in Georgia said the 1921 Constitution was “a remarkable achievement” that firmly places the country in the “wider European family of values” that include respect for human rights, the rule of law and the defense of opinion and opinion Media freedom belong.
The EU delegation stressed that the Constitution was “ahead of its time” by introducing, among other things, universal suffrage, proportional elections, socio-economic rights and frameworks for the implementation of justice and the abolition of the death penalty, and said these benchmarks were “high “Relevant” to the modern Georgian state.
The Swedish Ambassador to Georgia, Ulrik Tideström, said: “tThe 1921 Constitution marked a milestone for Georgia’s unity, democracy and European values. “May all sides act in the same spirit today and work together peacefully to strengthen democracy and continue European integration,” he added.
