Immigrant rights advocates are calling on Georgian congressmen to close the immigrant detention center – WABE

Last month, immigrant rights groups filed a complaint with the Department of Homeland Security after women being held in immigration detention at the Stewart Detention Center accused a nurse of sexual assault.

Now those groups are asking the Georgia House delegates to join Senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff in asking the Department of Homeland Security for an investigation.

“It should be obvious to everyone that Stewart is not a place to hold people,” said Azadeh Shahshahani, the legal and advocacy director for Project South, one of the organizations that filed the original complaint. “It should be closed as soon as possible.”

Congress intervened at another Georgia detention center two years ago when forced hysterectomies were reported at the Irwin detention center. This facility is no longer used for immigration detention.
