In the United States, 40 million people are foreign-born. Of these, 72 percent are legal immigrants and 28 percent are illegal immigrants. Approximately 4.5 million children born in the United States were born to at least one unauthorized parent. The influx of illegal immigrants from Mexico has declined from 500,000 per year in the first half of the decade to 150,000 per year from 2007 to 2009. Georgia has about 325,000 illegal immigrants in the labor force, or 7 percent of the total – making it one of the states with the largest number and largest share of illegal immigrants in the workforce
