Officials began investigating the issue in February after the Echols County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the GBI’s HEAT Division in a human trafficking case involving a minor, GBI said.
“The investigation revealed that the minor was a victim of human trafficking for forced labor,” GBI said, adding that “after entering the United States, the minor victim was forced to work in the fields.”
Officials said the victim eventually ran away and asked law enforcement for help.
Jail records from Lowndes County, where Juan-Ramos is being held, show she is being held without bail. Those arrested by the Echols County Sheriff’s Office will be lodged in the Lowndes County Jail.
