Foreign nationals who work in the IT sector, including Indian specialists, can soon have a new kind of residence permit in Georgia as part of a proposed change from the country's immigration law.
The changes are part of the legal requests for the legal status of extraterrestrials and state valleys, which are currently taken into account by the Georgian parliament. The legislative proposal was presented by members of the Georgian Dream.
Who can apply?
The new category of residence permit applies to migrant workers who are employed in the IT area. According to the proposals submitted by the government, this includes:
Employees of international technology companies
People who have registered as a small business owner in Georgia
Your family members
Applicants must register with the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Protection. You also have to provide proof of at least two years of professional experience and an annual income of at least $ 25,000.
Allow conditions and validity
After the proposal:
The approval will initially be valid for three years
It can be extended up to twelve years
Approval holder must remain in Georgia for at least 183 days, who are at least 183 days per year
If you do not meet the requirements of the stay, will lead to the revocation
It is expected that the legislation will be passed by a quick procedure in the coming weeks.
Georgia's popularity increases among the Indians
The Indian community in Georgia has recorded rapid growth in recent years. In 2016 there were only around 2,000 Indians in the country – half of them students. According to the Indian government, this number has now risen to almost 20,000, with 16,000 studying at Georgian universities.
The Ministry of External Affairs has strengthened its focus on Georgia as part of a more comprehensive range in regions with growing Indian population. Farmers, specialists and now IT professionals of the former wave of Indian students are competing.
Georgia is also a popular travel destination. The Georgian message said that the number of Indian tourists rose by 64 percent in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year. In the previous year, almost 80,000 Indian travelers visited Tbilisi and ski area in the country's mountain regions.
