Georgia Rita Meagher, 95, of East Hardwick, Vt., Died with her family on January 6, 2022.
Georgia was born in New York City on September 23, 1926, the eldest of five children of Michael and Jane (Federico) Garcia. During World War II, Georgia worked for the US government in New York City, where she met her lifelong friend, Mary O’Neill. Georgia married Frank Nagle in 1958 and settled in Dumont, NJ, where they raised two daughters, Mary Jane and Irene. Georgia has served in a variety of government positions throughout her career, including serving as legal secretary in the US Attorney’s Office in Newark. Georgia’s first husband, Frank, died in 1985. In 1994, Georgia married Robert A. Meagher. Robert died in 2007. Georgia lived in Stirling, NJ for several years, where she was an active member of the Long Hill Seniors. In 2019 she moved to Vermont to live with her daughter and son-in-law.
Georgia loved music and for many years sang in the choir at Sacred Heart Church in Haworth, NJ. Georgia was particularly good at crossword puzzles, participating in group crosswords with her son-in-law and extended family during the pandemic.
Georgia leaves two daughters, Mary Jane Nagle and Irene Nagle-Gilmartin; Son-in-law Brian Gilmartin; four grandchildren, Katie, Peter, Martin, and Elizabeth Gilmartin; Siblings John Garcia from Texas and Natalie Garcia from Connecticut and sister-in-law Kathy Garcia from Texas. She also leaves behind her dear friend of 75, Mary O’Neill from Connecticut. Georgia was pre-deceased by the brothers Michael and Vincent Garcia.
A Christian funeral mass will be held at St. Michael’s Church in Greensboro Bend on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 11 a.m. The family will be met with friends at St. Michael’s an hour before the service. The funeral will take place on Monday, January 10, 2022 at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY at 2:00 p.m. The Groseilliers burial house takes care of the preparations. Georgia’s family would like to thank her team of carers who made it possible for her to continue living at home with her family. Special thanks also go to Caledonia Home Health and Hospiz.
