The girl’s mother and stepfather, whose names are withheld to protect the victim’s identity, have been charged with first degree cruelty to children and double third degree cruelty against children, according to The Moultrie Observer. The woman was also charged with aggravated assault, possession of a List III controlled substance, drugs to be kept in their original containers, and obstruction of a law enforcement officer, the newspaper reported.

The stepfather was also charged with terrorist threats and acts, as well as assault – domestic violence.

The age of the girl was not disclosed by the authorities.

According to the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on November 28 and was videotaped by the woman’s son. The video showed the woman trying to take her daughter’s cell phone and the child refused, the observer reported.

The woman took a Hello Kitty blanket from a nearby couch and tried to suffocate her daughter, Sheriff’s office investigator Christ Robinson said.

“The daughter was able to fend off her mother after receiving a few blows on the side of her head,” said Robinson. “(The woman) then went to get the stepfather who was outside.”

According to the sheriff’s office, the stepfather took the child’s cell phone and smashed it into a TV stand. The man then threw the broken cell phone at his stepdaughter.

“After throwing the phone, (the man) said to the girl, ‘I’m going to stab you in the heart with a butcher’s knife,'” said Robinson.

Representatives were sent to the home and tried to arrest the woman, the observer reported.

“She fought briefly and had to be fought in the back of a patrol unit,” Robinson told the newspaper. “There were three Xanax pills in her bag that weren’t in their original box. The stepfather was arrested without incident. “

The children in the home were taken from the scene by another family member, the observer reported. The woman and stepfather were detained in the Colquitt County Jail and denied bail, the newspaper said.

“I suppose they’ll be with us for a while,” said Robinson.
