Social media users have commented on efforts by local Georgia police to enforce a truck parking ordinance in the city of Tifton.

The Tifton Police Department recently took to Facebook to remind drivers of City Ordinance 78-33, which prohibits parking semi-trucks or trailers on residential streets or in yards.

The ordinance also prohibits truckers from leaving designated truck routes and entering a residential street unless they are delivering “as determined by the City of Tifton.”

Drivers who violate the ordinance are guilty of a city misdemeanor and are subject to a fine of “not more than $1,000.00 and imprisonment in the city or county jail for a maximum of 180 days or both a fine and imprisonment and a suspended labor service.” ; and all penalties may be imposed as alternatives, and fines may be imposed as alternatives to imprisonment and labor if fines are not paid,” the city ordinance said.

The regulation is not new but was reportedly made public due to growing concerns about truck parking in residential areas. According to local newspaper WALB, Tifton Police Chief Steve Hyman shared the post after several complaints from residents about trucks.

Since Hyman shared the post on Feb. 27, more than 350 commenters have taken to Facebook to share their thoughts. Here’s what they say:

“Sounds like the town of Tifton will have to go without anything trucked in for a while until they pull this stupid crap back. Everyone wants to say “There is a shortage of truckers”, “We need drivers”, “Why are the store shelves so empty”, but then they want to make it difficult for people to actually BE truckers. I hope Tifton sees the error in their ways and reverses this,” said one commenter.

“At a time when we need truckers more than ever and truckers are standing up for their country when others aren’t, that’s an idiot slap in the face. A person who cannot provide for himself and his family with a trailer truck and then comes and parks his livelihood on his own property? Sounds like Tifton needs fresh leadership in the areas of law, local regulation and code enforcement. Absolute rubbish,” said another person.

“Dear Mayor and Police Service of this shitty little town. We all drivers want to get home safely at the end of the day. Which apparently breaks the law if you’re trying to bring your bobtail into your home. Our job is hard enough. Shame on you,” said another commenter.

“If the neighborhood doesn’t have a HOA prohibiting it, or if the infrastructure doesn’t support it, the government should NOT be telling me what it is, what I can and can’t park on MY land. I have frequently transported chemicals to and from Tifton. You won’t see my truck again. I’d rather tow somewhere west where parking is friendlier and I’m a little more valued for my work,” said one Facebook commenter.
