MURPHY, NC — After 50 burglaries in the Cherokee County area, a repeat offender from Georgia has finally been arrested in Cherokee, North Carolina.

The arrest came on March 31, 2022, when the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office arrested 35-year-old Jack Earnest Smith of Baldwin Georgia in connection with multiple burglaries committed on March 30, 2021.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the burglaries weren’t his only encounter with the law.

“When Smith was transferred from one local health facility to another in western North Carolina in January 2022, it was reported that he stole personal items, including financial cards, from Cherokee County health workers. After Smith was cleared for incarceration, he was arrested on charges related to the previous theft. Smith was released on unsecured bond on March 26, 2022.”

The day before his arrest, Smith was discovered attempting a break-in when the owner of the apartment watched him and saw him running out of the house.

Also, on the night of March 30, 2022, “several other vehicles and buildings were broken into.”

“Additionally, the responding deputy of one of the reported burglaries and burglaries found the release warrant issued to Smith at the time of his release on March 26, 2022,” according to the sheriff’s office.

Smith was arrested and sent to the Cherokee County Detention Center for five counts of breaking into and entering a motor vehicle.

He is currently on $9000.00 secure bail and has a Cherokee County District Court date of April 28, 2022.

Chief Deputy Joe Wood stated, “I would like to commend the work of the Patrol and Investigations Division. Teamwork helped to end this situation quickly. We continue to investigate several other break-ins related to Smith’s crime spree.
