COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – Georgia’s relocation law may soon be amended to expand protections for ordinary citizens who are stopped on highways.
Right now, drivers in the lane next to the hard shoulder have to swerve across a lane or slow down when they approach emergency and commercial vehicles on the motorway. A bill introduced in the state House of Representatives calls for this law to require drivers to transfer for anyone who is stopped at the side of the freeway. During Thursday’s legislative session, Columbus attorney-now legislator Teddy Reese took the opportunity to honor a Columbus tow truck driver who was killed on the job in December.
“If you look at last year, Jonathan became the 45th tow truck driver to die from a stroke while on the job across the state. And that’s why we need to reduce that, because Jonathan leaves behind two children and a wife,” Reese said.
After the bill passes the House of Representatives, Rep. Reese says it will go to the Senate on Crossover Day at the end of the month.
