A suspect fatally shot and killed Cortez Richardson while he was in the back of his mother’s vehicle on August 13, according to the FBI.

The boy and his family were driving home from dinner when their vehicle got caught in the crossfire between two other vehicles the FBI referred to as a white sedan and a white SUV.

“I know the last time I see my son I’ll be hit hard. When I bury my child,” said Tiffany Richardson, Cortez’s mother, to WTMV, a local ABC broadcaster. “I won’t be able to see my child in his bed, wake him up in the morning. It’s time for school. It hits me at night, but it hasn’t hit me hard yet because I feel like his ghost is still in here.”

“Just a boy. He doesn’t have the chance to see the world. You took him with you when he was young,” she told WTMV.
