COLUMBUS, Georgia (WRBL) – Columbus marked his 65th murder Monday morning as a robbery that resulted in death. The incident occurred right outside the entrance to Synovus Bank on Buena Vista Road – right next to the East Precinct of the Columbus Police Department.
Amit Kumar Patel, 45, was the victim of this fatal robbery. He was the owner of the Chevron gas station on Buena Vista Road, only a mile or so from the crime scene. He was shot dead around 9:30 a.m. in broad daylight
The Huntsville Police Department remembered cop Billy Clardy III two years later
Columbus police responded to the scene and found that Patel was suffering from gunshot wounds. Rescue workers arrived on site but were unable to resuscitate him. Muscogee County’s assistant medical examiner Charles Newton pronounced Patel dead just after 10 a.m. The shooter took the bail Patel was carrying.
Muscogee County’s coroner Buddy Bryan knew the victim and his family personally – and says Columbus lost a hardworking, upright citizen.
“You know it really hurts to know that an innocent man was shot in broad daylight. Just trying to do his job. Deposit money from his business and go to work like we all try. ”
Buddy Bryan, Muscogee County Medical Examiner
Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson says law enforcement is working quickly to get the perpetrator behind bars.
Why was the Michigan shooting suspect sent back to class?
“Our police, our sheriff’s department, every law enforcement officer in our community are absolutely determined to make a very quick arrest and set an example out of it. Leave them out for the rest of their lives if we can. “
Mayor Skip Henderson
