Colombia is stepping up security forces in Cali amid violence

Colombia has sent more police and army units to Cali, its third largest city, to end civil unrest and vandalism during protests against controversial tax reform, the Defense Minister said on Friday. Unions called strikes in major cities in Colombia on Wednesday to urge President Ivan Duque’s administration to withdraw the reform it presented to Congress earlier this month to increase tax revenues. The most serious riots and vandalism occurred on Wednesday and Thursday in Cali, the capital of the Colombian province of Valle del Cauca. Among other things, banks and government agencies were attacked.
