A Georgia couple were arrested after police said their children were “severely malnourished” and some even had rickets.

According to an incident report from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the Children’s Hospital of Georgia about a severely malnourished child and met with a representative from the Department of Family and Children’s Services.

MPs reported that the child was on a ventilator and had since been diagnosed with rickets.

According to the National Institutes of Health, “Rachitis is a condition that causes children to have soft, weak bones. It usually occurs when children don’t get enough vitamin D, which helps growing bones absorb important nutrients.”

The incident report states, “The child also had bone malformations due to malnutrition.”

The responding MP said the child’s mother, identified as Tinka El, is in hospital and has two other children, a year-old and a week-old, who are at home with her husband Hassan Sahih Bey.

The MP said when Bey showed up at the hospital with the other children, doctors determined they too needed hospitalization. The 1-year-old was also diagnosed with rickets. The incident report said the 1-week-old was also severely malnourished.

El and Bey were arrested and charged with cruelty to children – depriving them of essential food and giving law enforcement a false name, address or date of birth.

According to the incident report, the couple claimed to be part of the Moorish sovereign civic group.

“Moorish sovereigns espouse an interpretation of the sovereign doctrine that African Americans represent an elite class within American society, with special rights and privileges that bestow upon them sovereign immunities that place them above federal and state authorities,” the Southern Poverty Law Center said the group . “They use this supposed immunity to justify refusing to pay taxes, get car insurance, register their vehicles, and defraud banks and other financial institutions.

“Many Moorish sovereigns also profit from the sale of fake registration, license and insurance documents on websites promoting Moorish sovereign beliefs and doctrines.”
