Georgia cities, counties on the federal list that are aimed at the “Sanctuary jurisdiction”

The Department of Homeland Security has published a new list in the United States in which they name more than 500 jurisdiction that it claims to hinder the enforcement of federal immigration – in which several Georgia communities are included.

What we know:

Athens, Atlanta and the counties of Athens-Clarke, Dekalb, Douglas and Fulton were reported for guidelines that say that federal officials say that they limit cooperation with immigration and customs authority (ICE). Kristi Noem, secretary of the homeland protection authority, said that such guidelines endanger public security by shielding “dangerous criminal foreigners” from federal authorities.

The list is part of an executive regulation signed by President Donald Trump at the beginning of this year, in which the federal government has to publicly identify states, cities and counties that were classified as a “sanctuary. These are areas that restrict communication with immigration officers or reject the prison inquiries, according to the Associated Press.

These jurisdiction are not only listed in public, but also the potential loss of federal financing. The federal authorities have the task of checking grants and contracts to determine which can be suspended or terminated on the basis of non -compliance.

Although there is no official legal definition for a “jurisdiction” for sanctuary, the term usually refers to places where local governments or law enforcement authorities restrict their cooperation with the enforcement of the immigration of the federal government.

What you say:

Fulton County published the following explanation as an answer:

Fulton County learned that it was called a protected area.

Fulton County corresponds to the state and state laws, including the law of Georgia, which prohibits the jurisdiction of the sanctuary. Our law enforcement agencies cooperate entirely with state and state authorities in enforcing the applicable laws. Fulton County also uses the e-verify platform in our attitude and procurement practices.

We are not aware of why this name was created and will research paths to reverse this name.

The background story:

In the past, ICE has rely on partnerships with local law enforcement agencies to expand its reach, especially in the context of programs such as 287 (G) that enable local authorities to carry out tasks to implement immigration. Followers of these local restrictions argue that they help to build trust in immigrant communities and claim that the enforcement of immigration should remain a federal responsibility.

The other side:

A coalition of local civil servants and interest groups criticized the list and called it a political step to force local governments to comply with compliance. They argue that sanctuary policy is lawful and help to make communities safer.

After the murder of Riley's murder, Athens Clarke County was accused of being a sanctuary. Riley was killed in February 2024 by Jose Ibarra, a Venezuelan citizen, who illegally entered the USA in 2022. He was later convicted and condemned in that case. The mayor of Athen-Clarke, Kelly Girtz, denied that the consolidated district had violated the state law and found that it submitted an annual compliance certificate. Critics refer to a resolution of the Athens Clarke County Commission for 2019, which said that the local government is “striving to promote a community in which individuals of all status feel safe”. But Girtz notes that the resolution does not have the legal force.

Implementation in Metro Atlanta:

Although the Department of Homeland Security has not published official figures, it routinely publishes photos and information about arresting “illegal foreigners” in its social media accounts. Local law enforcement authorities are often mentioned and/or seen in these places.

What's next:

While earlier efforts to reduce the funding from the jurisdiction of the sanctuary had legal challenges, the cities and counties in Georgia are now among those under the re -examination, since the administration increases the pressure.
