Bishel, Georgia May (Wilkinson)

Hastings resident Georgia May (Wilkinson) Bishel, aged 103, of Hastings, NE, died peacefully on June 4, 2022 surrounded by loved ones. Georgia was born on October 15, 1918 in Grand Island, N, to Lyman and Henrietta (Frimel)Wilkinson. Georgia attended school in Grand Island and Brewster, NE. She then attended Wayne State Teachers College. She then taught in the Morningside District near Oakland, NE. After receiving her bachelor’s degree, she taught fourth grade in Ogden, IA. After two years in Iowa, she worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington DC. During this time she married and worked for two years while her husband served in the army. The marriage ended in 1952 and Georgia worked for the FBI until 1963.
Georgia returned to Nebraska and began her teaching career at Longfellow School in Hastings, NE, where she taught for 19 years. While teaching, she also received her master’s degree from UNL in Lincoln, NE.
Georgia was very interested in Czech culture and was a member of the South Central Nebraska Czech Society. She loved traveling to the Czech Republic. She also loved the trips at the Elderhostel. Georgia was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings, Ruth Circle and Lamplighters Sunday School Class. Georgia was also a member of the YMCA, where she served on the board of directors. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Hastings Area Retired Teachers and the Friendship Tea Group. Georgia also loved volunteering at the Hastings Museum and she helped deliver Meals on Wheels. Georgia also had a fondness for Husker football and volleyball.
Georgia is survived by her brother Lyman Wilkinson of Columbus, NE; nieces, Eileen (George) Lippold of Waverley NE, Georgia Green of Rock Island IL and Sallie Wilkinson of Lincoln, NE; nephews Bruce Wilkinson of Omaha and Todd (Gail) Wilkinson of Lincoln NE; special friends, Chief Brad, Dr. Carley, Michayla, Jaydi and Blayse Starling of Hastings NE; and many great, great, great, great, great, nieces and nephews, cousins and many dear friends. Georgia was preceded in death by her parents Lyman Sr. and Henrietta Wilkinson; sister and brother-in-law, Lucy and Robert Paulsen; sister and brother-in-law Luessa and Frank Burkhartsmeyer; sister-in-law Patricia Wilkinson; and nephew-in-law Edward Green.
Services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday 8 June at Grace United Methodist Church, Hastings with Rev. Dr. Lee R. Wigert will officiate. FUNERAL will be held at Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. The VISIT will take place on Tuesday, June 7 from 9:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home and will continue one hour before the service at the church in the presence of the family. Instead of flowers, memorials may be presented to the Czech Language Foundation and the Georgia Bishel Child Literacy Fund.
