ATLANTA – Georgia Governor Brian Kemp will be introducing new laws Friday morning dealing with reckless street racing.

The press conference will be held in the north wing of the Georgia State Capitol at 11:30 a.m.

11Alive will stream the briefing on 11Alive.com and our YouTube channel.

In the last few months around the Atlanta subway, police authorities have reported an increase in drivers “pulling” or illegally hauling on city streets and highways.

The trend has become an issue for state and city guides trying to counter it.

In fact, state Senator Emmanuel Jones tabled a bill aimed at reckless driving following the death of an innocent mother in DeKalb County in January. Her family claims it is illegal street racing. However, authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, most recently verified.

Senator Emmanuel Jones’ bill would make it a crime to promote, advertise, or participate in an event that involves dragging drivers or illegally racing on the street.

The bill also calls for special “high performance” license plates required for cars manufactured or modified with 650 horsepower or greater.

Under SB10, relocating the drag would result in 8 points on a driver’s license. In Georgia, 15 points lead to a license ban within 24 months.

Relocation of drag and illegal street racing would also be considered a “major and aggravated offense” with fines of up to $ 2,500, and cars would be confiscated at the driver’s expense pending litigation.

No word yet on whether this is the legislation Kemp will be supporting during the press conference.
