A 13-year-old from Georgia became the first person under the age of 18 in his entire county to die of COVID-19 on Tuesday. Porter Helms was in quarantine at home and the boy’s condition appeared stable, as it had all week when his father delivered his medication around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Two hours later, however, his father found him unresponsive and was not breathing. Paramedics couldn’t save Helms. “This is the first teenager we can actually say died from the COVID-19 virus,” said Floyd County’s medical examiner Gene Proctor. It is unclear whether Helms was vaccinated. The more contagious Delta variant has seen an increase in cases across the state, and hospitals there are filling up with children, as they are all over the south.
