GBI is investigating taking pictures by officers in South Georgia

MPs said they contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to request an independent investigation by their agency.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Camden County family calls for responses after two of their loved ones were shot dead by MPs early Tuesday morning.

37-year-old Latoya James was killed after visiting her cousin, 46-year-old Varshaun Brown, at his home on the 12000 block of Highway 17 south of Woodbine, according to family and GBI.

James’ relatives live next door to the scene but say they were kept in the dark by investigators for most of the day.

“You’re not telling me anything. My baby is still on the floor, ”Betty James, the victim’s mother, told First Coast News.

Family said Brown was hospitalized with at least four gunshot wounds.

“I’m always scared for my babies,” said James. “I am always afraid for my babies because of the color of their skin. And my fear finally came. ”

“[The police] did it that way, if they’re wondering why we’re scared, that’s how they did it, ”said Carolyn Woods, Latoya James’ aunt, as she comforted her sister.

The Camden County Sheriff’s MPs asked the GBI to lead the investigation. The GBI said it had a drug-related search warrant at home, according to a press release.

Investigators say after the MPs knocked on the door and identified themselves, they entered the house.

According to the GBI, there was an exchange of fire between law enforcement agencies and residents of the house. Brown was injured in the shooting and James was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pastor Mack Knight of the Impact Worship Center is Brown’s cousin. Knight says the family was distraught after the details were released Tuesday afternoon.

“The person we know [Latoya]We don’t think a gun was ever fired at the police, ”Knight said.

Knight said Brown is fine and has several surgeries ahead of him. Knight also says his cousin had his own personal security cameras around the house.

“We’re trying to work with the security teams to find out what video we can see,” added Knight.

Meanwhile, James’ family continues to mourn a woman who raised a young daughter.

“I want answers, and I want them now,” said James’ mother. “You tell them why they shot my baby. I was just with my baby yesterday, I left them at 8 am last night. Waking up and [they] Tell me she’s dead ”

According to the GBI, there is a bodycam video of the incident, but it will not be released due to the ongoing investigation.

No officers were injured in the incident. It is the 27th Georgia fatal shooting this year.
