Former Georgia football coach Vince Dooley opens up about the new Walker ad

Former University of Georgia soccer coach Vince Dooley stars in a new campaign ad for his former star player, Georgia Republican Senate nominee Herschel Walker.

In Thursday’s ad, Dooley, who won 201 games during his 25-year coaching career with Georgia, cited Walker’s drive and discipline as reasons he will make a great congressman.

“Herschel has always been challenged to do things people thought he couldn’t do. With this incredible drive and this self-discipline, he wants to be the best,” says the 90-year-old ex-soccer coach.

Dooley, who had recently recovered from a battle with COVID-19, previously tried running for the US Senate as a Democratic candidate in 1985 but ultimately chose to continue training, according to the New York Times.

Walker spent three years at the University of Georgia and led the Bulldogs to the National Championship in his freshman year in 1980.

“He has achieved great things. He loves the United States of America. He’s also realistic that it can get better,” Dooley says in the ad. “This state needs someone like Herschel, he’s going to be a great US Senator.”

The new ad comes as Walker is neck and neck with incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) in the closely watched race for the Senate, which could prove crucial in determining which party controls the Senate.

Walker has faced a slew of scandals and blips in recent weeks, but they’ve had little impact on his poll numbers. Reports surfaced last month that he paid for an abortion for his then-girlfriend in 2009, which he denies.

Warnock has also mocked Walker for his claims about his past work with law enforcement, prompting Walker to pull out a deputy sheriff’s badge of honor during their lonely debate earlier this month, prompting a warning from the moderator.
