A 34-year-old Georgia father of four died after falling down a drain while working as a plumber just months before he was due to marry his fiancee.

Robert Hall slipped and fell about 20 feet off a ladder into the maintenance hole at Armuchee High School in Rome, Georgia on Wednesday, WSB-TV reported.

Due to the methane gas, it took rescuers almost 45 minutes to get Hall out.

They were unable to revive the unconscious man, his future father-in-law, John Burtz, told Atlanta News First.

According to a GoFundMe page, Hall is survived by his fiancé, Melina Rich, and four young children — his eldest son, Rylon, who lives with his mother, and Leanna, Anniston, and Weston.

“He worked hard every day to support his family,” Burtz told Atlanta News First. “They got married in October and had everything ready. They were preparing for a long and happy future.”

Hall’s 8-year-old daughter, Leanna, remembered her father as simply “the best.”

“He came home every day with a smile on his face,” she told WSB-TV.

Hall’s sister Kari Hall said, “It hurts so much to know that he is no longer with us.” He loved his family. He loved his fiancee. He loved (her) with every part of his soul.”

The family is looking for answers about the tragedy.

“It doesn’t make sense to me why it takes so long to get there when you should have been prepared for something like this,” Kari told WSB, adding that the methane gas in the sewers may have contributed to his death .

“You know that stuff is awful. it will kill you I have a feeling maybe that got him,” she said.

Another sister, Roby Hames, said the couple had already paid for the wedding venue and catering.

“They have already started their life together. They wanted to make it official,” she told the outlet.

Floyd County Schools Superintendent Glenn White offered his condolences.

“This accident has impacted our school system, family and stakeholders in many ways, and we are actively supporting those directly affected,” he said in a statement.

“During this time, we have expressed our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family. We also understand that this is a difficult time for the company that lost this employee and we want to extend our thoughts to her and everyone else who knew and loved this person,” added White.

The GoFundMe page raised over $17,000 as of Tuesday afternoon.

“Like all of us, his family was not prepared for this tragedy. “Robert was the only breadwinner for his family without insurance,” it said.
