Explanation against Fara in Georgia

“In the United States, the current Fara Act (registration law for foreign agents) does not hinder the work of independent NGOs or free media, while the illegitimate regime of [Bidzina] Ivanishvili tries to transcend the Russian law adopted against civil society, ”says the joint explanation of the Georgian NGOs and the media organizations.

The declaration aims to oppose the law draft initiated by the Governing Georgian dream party, which is supposedly a word-for-word translation of the American Fara Act.

“Every complaint of the illegitimate parliament of Ivanishvili, which restricts the freedom of the people, is unconstitutional and anti -popular. The tightening of a failed law in Russian style in order to intimidate citizens with criminal law enforcement is also unconstitutional and against the interests of the country,” write the authors of the explanation.

They remember that as early as 2023 they warned that the law of the “foreign agent” (“on the transparency of foreign influence”) would gradually be gradually exacerbated, impaired all citizens and severely restrict their rights – just like in Russia and other authoritarian regulations.

In her view, the initiation and acceptance of this law was to shift the country's foreign policy and a betrayal of the Georgian constitution.

“The Ivanishvili regime tries to suppress any expression of freedom. According to the politically motivated arrests of over 50 people, raids and repression, it is now trying to give up victims of violence -women and children -the funds for scientists, adolescents and socially vulnerable families, regions, workers, workers, internal fusion and all these fights for their rights.

For the third time in a row, the Georgian civil society has made it clear to the Georgian civil society: We will not live or work according to Russian laws. In any form, a law in Russian style will never be Georgia's choice. Accordingly, we remain committed to the signed independent Georgian NGOs and media organizations, the constitution of Georgia and our mission – the population in Georgia, ”says the explanation, which was signed by over a hundred organizations, including Jamnews.
