Our Emergency Management Agency (EMA) team spends their time preparing for anything and everything. During a storm or an active emergency, – they are fast, communicative, efficient, and done.
But between those urgent situations, they spend time helping people prepare for emergencies, making sure we all work together well — and quickly — when a disaster strikes. One of those people is Moranda Guy, and you’ll sleep better knowing she has your back when it comes to preparedness and quick response. That’s why she’s in this week’s Staff Spotlight.
Moranda has just celebrated her fifth year as Administrative Officer at EMA, but she’s been in the business of helping people in need much longer. She started with our E911 team in 2000. Now she’s the driving force behind our first Emergency Preparedness Fair, which will be held this weekend (Saturday 17 September – Click here for details).
It’s an opportunity for all of our community partners to work together and speak to the public about how to prepare for anything. From emergency preparedness kits to first aid and a preparedness plan, the event is for everyone and everyone, and Moranda is the perfect person to handle it. To hear her, working with the public was a natural step in her life.
“It is a passion of mine to help people. I have always considered myself a servant leader and knew early on that I wanted to make the best impact in my community. ‘ Moranda says. “Emergency management was that door for me. It was an opportunity to combine my love for people with my love for my community. When it comes to preparedness and emergencies, people turn to their government for advice, but there is more we can do as individuals to help our neighbors and families.”
EMA Director Spencer Hawkins agrees and says he’s proud to be working with her. “Moranda Guy is an important factor in the success of Macon-Bibb Emergency Management. In her 5 years with the agency, she has progressed from administrative duties and supporting our operations to leading outreach programs such as our Emergency Preparedness Fair and Interfaith Security Summit. She continues to give 100% to ensure every citizen of Macon-Bibb County has the resources to be alert and prepared.”
We asked Moranda to tell us who she is – both at work and at home. “I love people and inclusion. I am very compassionate, which I learned from my parents. My dad always told me don’t do anything or be a part of anything so it can be part of your obituary – do it from the heart. That’s how I do it! Nothing I do is just a title, it’s a part of me. I don’t need recognition or awards; I just want to love people and help them.”
Moranda’s love of people extends beyond her career, although. She was born and raised here in Macon and she and her husband Eddie are foster parents. They have fostered four children and say it is not just for the child.
“Obviously we want to love the child and make them feel safe, but we want their parents to know that their child is being cared for and has a safe place while they recover or take care of themselves. Every situation is different, but it is our responsibility to show love.”
Moranda, you are a light in our community, and we’re better for having you on the #TeamMaconBibb!
