Donald Trump has turned down his last chance to testify before the civil trial in New York, where he is accused of the historic rape of journalist E Jean Carroll.
Mr. Trump, a Republican presidential nominee in 2024, was given until 5 p.m. Sunday by U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan to file a request for testimony. Nothing was deposited.
It comes after lawyers for Mr Trump and E Jean Carroll dropped their cases in his civil rape trial on Thursday after nearly two weeks of allegations the former president raped the magazine columnist in the 1990s.
Afterward, Judge Lewis Kaplan left the door open for Mr Trump to testify at the last minute and gave his defense team the 5 p.m. deadline to confirm whether or not the former president will appear.
Last Thursday, Mr Trump said he would cut short his trip to Ireland to “confront” Ms Carroll about the case.

Trump twice mistaken E Jean Carroll for his ex-wife Marla Maples
Footage of Donald Trump’s video testimony at E. Jean Carroll’s defamation and sexual battery trial shows that he twice mistook his accuser for his ex-wife, Marla Maples.
The video was released in response to a request from MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow.
Ms Carroll alleges Mr Trump sexually assaulted her in the fitting room of a Bergdorf Goodman store in the mid-1990s.
Recently released documents include Ms Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, who confronted Mr Trump over his claim that she was not his “type” when she denied her allegations, according to Law&Crime.
“When Trump was confronted with the photo of Carroll and himself from a party before the rape, Trump twice misidentified Carroll as his ex-wife Marla Maples and insisted Maples was smiling at him in the photo when in fact it was the woman , which he pointed out to Carroll himself,” she said, according to the documents.

Lara Trump denies the rift between the Trump children
But Ivanka’s sister-in-law Lara has claimed the development hasn’t resulted in a family split.
Mr Trump and his three eldest children – Ivanka, Donald Jr. and Eric – were all named in a $250 million civil fraud lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James last fall.
The lawsuit aims to recover funds from alleged fraudulent operations by the Trump Organization. The lawsuit also seeks to remove all four of Trump’s family members from their positions at the company and ban them from holding senior positions in New York State.

Tucker Carlson plans to host the GOP debate despite being axed from Fox
Carlson split from Fox News in late April and is not currently affiliated with any network or media outlet, but the Washington Post reported Thursday that he is keen to host an independent primary debate and has been in touch with former President Donald Trump – the currently poll ahead of the rest of the GOP field – on the idea.
A possible debate between Carlson and Mr Trump would likely be seen as a serious challenge for Fox News, whose primetime ratings have plummeted since Carlson’s sacking.
Fox News is expected to host the first Republican primary debate in August, but Mr Trump has threatened to skip that debate – and the next – out of personal frustrations with hosting and broadcasting companies and concerns that sharing a phase of the debate with his challengers could do so strengthen their profile.

Trump is accused of rape in court. Will it still matter in 2024?
E. Jean Carroll testified, in sometimes searing detail, about the day she said Donald Trump raped her in a department store dressing room two decades before taking office, allegations the Republican has repeatedly and vehemently denied.
Two friends who took the stand in support of Carroll this week told jurors they spoke to the magazine’s former columnist shortly after the alleged 1996 attack and that they believe she is telling the truth. Other women testified about separate encounters; One said Trump grabbed and fondled her on a flight in the late 1970s, the other told jurors he forcefully kissed her at his Florida home in 2005.
The reports, shared during the civil trial over Carroll’s allegations of assault and defamation against Trump, mark the first time one of the numerous sexual misconduct allegations against the former president has been heard in a court of law. Given the opportunity to refute Carroll’s allegations on the witness stand, Trump declined to appear and instead traveled overseas. He told reporters in Ireland that he could still testify in person, although his lawyer said in court he would not and that they would not produce any other witnesses.

Trump will cut short Ireland trip and return to New York to ‘confront’ E Jean Carroll.
Speaking to reporters while golfing at his Doonbeg resort on Thursday, Mr Trump said he will “likely” attend the trial, which will hear his final day of evidence before concluding arguments next week.
“I’ve been falsely accused by this woman, I have no idea who she is – it’s ridiculous,” he said.
“I’m going back early because a woman made a claim that’s completely false, it’s fake.”
