Friends,
The General Assembly concluded the 24th day of legislation last week. Four more legislative days remain for one chamber to pass new legislation for consideration by the other chamber. The legislation we passed this past week touches on many areas that are important to the people of District 159.

Our farmers
Agriculture remains the largest economic sector in Georgia, employing over 40% of Georgians and contributing over $70 billion to the economy. House Bill 1150 strengthens safeguards that shield Georgia farms from harassment lawsuits while respecting the property rights of their neighbors.
Stand up for our men and women in uniform
Men and women in uniform – in both law enforcement and the military – protect us at home and abroad and deserve our thanks. We passed several laws this week that give them the respect they deserve.
House Bill 1064 adds an income tax exemption of up to $35,000 for military retirees and recognizes the contributions our militaries can make to the private sector with the skills they have developed after retirement.
House Bill 1216 increases the minimum fine from $500 to $1000 and increases overall penalties for fleeing or attempting to evade a police officer. The higher fines and penalties associated with this bill will deter drivers from evading prosecution and better protect our police and public from dangerous motorists.

Our children
Our children are the future of Georgia – but I will never be a better advocate for your children than you. That’s why this week I sponsored several laws that ensure you — and not the government — can be the primary advocate for your family.
House Bill 1178, the Parents’ Bill of Rights, establishes that parents have the right to review the curriculum and direct the moral and religious upbringing of their children. House Bill 1084, the Protect Students First Act, prohibits the use of curricula that promote divisive concepts. The bill also requires each local education authority to adopt a grievance resolution policy to address grievances regarding alleged violations of this new policy.
Anniversary of the Battle of Brier Creek
Last Saturday, I joined parishioners and the Revolutionary War Sons and Daughters to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Brier Creek, located in the Tuckahoe Wildlife Management Area in Screven County. Each year we gather at the burial site of almost 150 of those who died in this battle to commemorate their valiant fight for our freedom.
